When the weather turns for the better and we are blessed with warm sunny days, one of the best places to be is in the garden. What could possibly be better than a picnic on the grass? Well, possibly a comfortable sit-down meal, in cool shade, away from nagging insects but still in full view of your leafy sanctuary…

There’s nothing better than sitting under a tree reading a book, or playing alongside your children in the garden. But you can certainly enhance the experience by having that extra space between the garden and the house. A well built conservatory or orangery has so many great uses, you’ll never know how you lived without one!

Shelter from the weather…

We all know what the British weather can be like… one minute it’s baking hot sunshine, and the next minute there’s a summer shower. Rain needn’t stop play when you have a safe haven to duck into until the rain blows over. Just make sure you have some activities for the kids tucked away in a box in the corner, or curl up in a chair with a good book while the weather does it’s worst!

Wet room…

Speaking of rain… another great benefit of having a room between your house and the garden is cleanliness! Working in the garden with muddy boots? Children having water fights in the paddling pool? Dog running around in the wet grass? All these filthy problems can be contained in your conservatory or orangery, especially if you have a tiled floor and washable rugs.

Playroom…

Kids these days are either the type to be out and about all day, or sat in front of a games console. Summer weather is a great time to coax the latter out of their room and down into the garden. Younger children love treasure hunts, water games and sand play. Older kids and teens might be more inclined to sit and listen to music or read a book. All of these activities can be improved with a glazed extension on your home. Somewhere comfortable, warm, shaded to enjoy the view but away from nagging bugs and yet still benefit from fresh air and sunshine to top up their vitamin D levels. Here are some great ideas for children in the garden.

Flowers, house plants or grow-your-own…

Your conservatory or orangery is a great place to grow plants of all kinds. It’s also the perfect place to germinate seeds or indeed grow the odd tomato or herb. Not only do you benefit from fresh produce, but there’s nothing like the aroma of a fresh tomato plant or mint to perk up a living space.

Dining room…
